Keep reading to find out more!

We need your input to launch a Repair Café in the Meadows!

Come along to our workshop to get involved with setting up a Repair Café in the Meadows. The workshop will decide who, what, when, and how we can get started, covering volunteer roles, the skills needed, the different things you want to mend, and more!

Where: Climate Hub, 32 Turney St, Meadows, NG2 2LG

When: Sat 15 Nov, 1:30pm-4:30pm

Everybody’s welcome. You don’t need to be from the Meadows to join. We encourage anybody who is interested in mending, getting stuff mended, part of a likeminded organisation or an existing repair café, to come along and get involved.

What’s a Repair Café?

Repair cafés are free and welcoming meeting places that bring people together to maintain and repair the things they need and love. The Repair Café provides the tools, materials and helping hands to support you in making any repairs you need, ranging from clothes, to furniture, electrical appliances, bicycles, jewellery, toys and more. They are reliant on volunteers who are motivated and eager to organise, mend, share skills, and keep the café going!

How can I Get Involved?

Repair Cafés typically rely on people volunteering for roles such as: Admin, Treasurer, PAT Tester, Volunteer Coordinators, Menders, Bakers, Health & Safety, First Aid, Marketing, Refreshments, Organising, Taking Down/Setting Up, and more.

There are plenty of ways to help, big or small.

Come to the workshop or email engage@greenmeadows.uk to let us know what you’re interested in. Don’t worry if you aren’t confident with DIY or are unsure how your skills fit. Repair cafés are all about sharing skills and learning from each other. Sign up to the workshop here.

Big Meadows Clean Up

Green Meadows would like to say how proud we are to see the Meadow's own Young Climate Champions out in action helping to keep the community clean and litter free.

Did you know that our three primary schools Greenfields Community School, Welbeck Primary School and Victoria Primary School can often be seen doing their bit for the community by picking up litter?

Greenfield's Eco Council members in particular became frustrated at how much litter kept reappearing. They decided to invite the schools to work together for one Big Meadows Clean Up! Last month each school worked with Amreen and Nathan from Clean Champions, Vince from Saffron Science Club and Hannah from Green Meadows to learn about the negative impacts litter has on our communities and what to do about it and then put what they learnt into action! We were happy to see our young people taking the initiative to look after our shared environment however, they need everyone's help to keep litter in the bin and recyclable items being re-used.

Special thanks to Clean Champions for providing equipment and collection of litter that was cleared into their purple bags. Also a huge thank you to local residents, such as Vince, who we know regularly donates their time to pick up litter in the Meadows so it continues to be a place we feel proud to live in.

DIY Club Update

Our DIY Club has been going strong, with members meeting weekly to share skills and work on projects. If you want to find out what it’s all about, DIY Club runs every Monday 10am-2pm and every Friday 4-8pm. Pop in for a morning or evening and get involved!

Sign up here.

During DIY Club, members work together on community projects e.g. building workbenches for the Men’s Shed’s initiative at the Meadows Foodbank. Do you have any requests or ideas for community projects? Let us know by coming along to a session or email admin@greenmeadows.uk.

Plus, we're already thinking ahead to the festive season and all the fun DIY projects we can do…

We are planning on arranging Festive sessions where people can make their own wall-hanging and tree decorations and gifts. You can either make your own ideas in our community workshop space, or come and find some inspiration, using materials provided.

The sessions will be on the 5th, 12th and 19th December (Fridays, 4pm to 8pm), and will be family friendly, so kids can come too (under parent/carer supervision).

No DIY experience necessary!

Meet Alice, Our New Green Learning Assistant

We’re thrilled to welcome Alice to the team. Alice will be working our Green Learning Coordinator, Hannah, to create a series of exciting lessons on Seas and Oceans.

Here are some facts shared by Alice:

“I worked in secondary schools in London for seven years before moving to Nottingham last year to complete a part-time MA in Classics at the University of Nottingham. Over the past year, I’ve been working as a supply teacher in primary schools. I have a personal interest in sustainable living, including second-hand clothing, plastic-free homeware, sustainable transport, and shopping locally. It’s been great to work with Green Meadows and not only apply some of my own knowledge in a local context but also learn about the local environment and how it’s being sustained and supported.”

“My MA is in Classics (not related to sustainability but still interesting) so I’m a bit of a history buff. I’m currently researching children’s reception of ancient history and literature (hence my interest in education and learning, and how children can learn about and interact with the world around them!). I also enjoy hiking and going to concerts in the Nottingham area (bands currently in my calendar to see are Little Comets, Magdalena Bay and The Vaccines).”

I’m really looking forward to getting to know the pupils in the schools we work in and what their ideas are to help the Meadows continue to be a welcoming and eco-friendly place.

We’re looking for Leaflet Deliverers to help us distribute leaflets and flyers in the Meadows.

Work is paid and part-time hours are available.

To find out more and have a chat with the team about it, email comms@greenmeadows.uk or call us on 0115 718 2028.
